Four Cheers for the ‘Solopreneur’…

We know there are a lot of you out there who are solopreneurs — working away for yourselves, building your brand, being the boss. We love that! And for those of you who are just starting out, we want you to know that you’re not alone and that the freelance lifestyle can be incredibly gratifying. And of course we’re here to help you with that, too (wink, wink — what boss doesn’t need fab print products?).  And with that, we thought we’d compile a fun little list of reasons why being your own boss is awesome. In the spirit of our favorite number — FOUR — here are four of those reasons:

  1. clock1You get to make your own hours. Four cheers for being on your own clock. Because no one except you can dictate the times of day (or night) that you’re feeling the most productive, the most creative or the most inspired. Mind you, we’re all for the structure of a 9-5 day because sometimes it can be incredibly grounding. And, of course, it’s often necessary to be available during these hours for your clients and employees. But for those of you who like to work independently and have a little wiggle room to do so, creating your own hours can be one of the keys to running a successful business. Just make sure that you remain mindful of others’ schedules that you may need to adhere to.
  2. You can work in your pajamas. Or wear a pink afro wig. You can even blast your favorite rock ballads if it helps you get the job done. Why not? Point being, you have no one but yourself to answer to, so why not work comfortably? Just make sure you’re also working smart and not showing up to client lunches in the same PJs you were in while drafting upyour expense report.
  3. You can decorate your office however you’d like. Fancy adorning your home office with your exotic figurines from around the world for inspiration — the ones that nobody else likes but you? Do it! No one is stopping you. What about that lonely ABBA poster you’ve been dying to hang for years? You know, the one that provokes periodic living room karaoke work breaks to “Dancing Queen?”  Yeah, that one. Hang it up above your desk — we dare ya. Because dancing breaks are never a bad idea. They certainly can break up the monotony of the day and help you to return to the desk refreshed.
  4. Location, location, location. Being your own boss, provided you don’t have clients or employees who need in-person access to you at all times, means you have complete location independence. This is the digital age, and we’re all so connected now via the internet, dozens upon dozens of wifi phone apps, social media and more which means it’s a really exciting time to be a business owner. If you have a laptop or a tablet, access to good wifi, and you’re able to get away for a bit, you can still do your job….anywhere in the world.
